Creative juices flow in Cape Town from this Friday

Cape Town's design and innovation district, The Fringe, will host a number of Creative Week events, as the week opens on Friday, 9 September 2011. These include several art and photography exhibitions, the launch of the Creative Cape Town Annual 2011 and a local celebration of Park(ing) Day - an internationally celebrated day on which parking spaces are turned into art installations.

City Hall Sessions kicks off on Friday night, followed by a repeat performance on Saturday with a series of diverse musical experiences featuring both international and local artists, all taking place at the Cape Town City Hall over the next eighteen months.

The brainchild of Creative Cape Town - and made possible through a grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) - the inaugural concert will feature the international duo Ray Lema and Chico César (Congo/Brazil), top South African act Thandiswa Mazwai and local jazz innovators Kesivan and The Lights.

Another highlight is Music City; a Cape music documentary film festival, which will be screened at the Labia on Orange (from 10 to 15 September), in partnership with Encounters Documentary Film Festival and the Cape Film Commission. Featured in the line-up is Afrikaaps, a film that explores the origin of Afrikaans through a hip-hop landscape, and a documentary on the Afrikaans punk band, Fokofpolisiekar.

In a partnership with VISI magazine and the Cape Town Design Network, Creative Week will also feature Meet the Makers (from 12 to 16 September 2011); a series of tours of design studios in and around the city and a chance to meet the creatives and innovators at work within them, from the graphic designers at Room 13 to lighting designer Heath Nash.
