Montego's Bags ’o Wags puts purpose at the heart of pet retail

For pet owners, treats are more than a product in a shopping basket. They are part of the everyday rituals that strengthen the bond between people and their animals – a reality that Montego Pet Nutrition is highlighting through its Bags ’o Wags range and its ongoing support for animal welfare.

As part of its Bursting with Character campaign, Montego partnered with Sweet Paws Rescue and Care to support vulnerable dogs and the people caring for them in the Helderberg community.

The initiative included almost 300kg of pet food and treats donated to Sweet Paws, as well as support for three community members caring for dogs in need.

For Montego, which has supported animal welfare initiatives for 26 years, the programme demonstrates how a petcare brand can extend its role beyond selling products to creating meaningful connections with the communities in which its customers live.

From product to purpose

Bags ’o Wags, Montego’s playful range of dog treats, forms part of these community handovers, giving dogs an additional moment of enjoyment while reinforcing the relationship between pets and their owners.

The approach also reflects a wider opportunity for the petcare retail sector. As consumers increasingly consider the values behind the brands they buy, retailers and manufacturers have an opportunity to connect products with causes that matter to pet owners.

In the informal and underserved communities supported by Sweet Paws, however, access to food is about more than consumption. It can provide an entry point for conversations around sterilisation, vaccinations, shelter, preventative healthcare and responsible pet ownership.

“We don’t drive in, hand out food and leave,” says Sweet Paws founder Anita Labuschagne. “We build relationships, earn trust and keep going back.”

That relationship-based approach gives product donations a longer-term impact, with food helping organisations establish trust and provide ongoing education.

Understanding the customer beyond the basket

The stories of three Helderberg community members – Colby, Muriel and Caliban – illustrate the different roles pets play in households and neighbourhoods.

At 13, Colby cares for dogs he has rescued from the street or removed from neglectful situations. For him, having enough food means being able to continue caring for animals he regards as his best friends.

In Broadlands, Muriel looks after seven dogs, including neighbourhood animals that visit her home for food, treats and affection. Following the loss of her husband, the dogs have also become an important source of companionship.

Then there is Caliban, who feeds between 21 and 25 dogs every week, including 12 sterilised dogs of his own. Some belong to neighbours who struggle to care for them, making his home a local point of support for animals in need.

Their experiences highlight the complexity of the petcare consumer market. A bag of dog food or a packet of treats can serve very different needs – from basic nourishment and animal health to companionship, reward and community care.

A role for retailers and brands

For the FMCG and petcare sectors, initiatives such as Montego’s partnership with Sweet Paws also demonstrate the potential of purpose-led retail.

Consumers increasingly encounter brands not only through shelves and online stores, but through the communities, causes and experiences associated with them.

Supporting animal welfare can therefore create opportunities for brands to demonstrate their values in tangible ways while addressing genuine needs.

The model also creates a connection between formal retail and community-based animal welfare. Members of the public can support Sweet Paws by purchasing food at a discounted rate through Montego, turning an everyday petcare purchase into a contribution towards animals and families requiring assistance.

Ultimately, the Bags ’o Wags story is about more than treats. It illustrates how a petcare product can become part of a much bigger ecosystem of care – connecting manufacturers, retailers, consumers, welfare organisations and community members around a shared commitment to better lives for animals.

For a category built around the emotional relationship between people and their pets, that may be one of retail’s most powerful propositions: selling products that make a difference, while building the relationships that give those products meaning.
