Search helped people find brands. ChatGPT Ads will help them choose

Conversational AI is changing more than how people search. It’s beginning to change how they evaluate, compare and choose. For brands, that creates a new advertising opportunity, and a new reason to start preparing before the media channel reaches South Africa.
Search helped people find brands. ChatGPT Ads will help them choose

Search transformed marketing by giving brands access to consumers at the moment they went looking for something.

Conversational AI is beginning to move that moment further down the decision journey.

People are no longer only asking where to find a product, service or solution. They are asking AI to help compare options, weigh trade-offs, solve problems and decide what is right for them.

That is a fundamentally different commercial moment.

Search helped people find brands. ChatGPT will increasingly help them choose the brand.

And advertising is beginning to enter that conversation.

While much of the South African market is still discussing what ChatGPT Ads could mean, Red September is already working inside the Beta environment in supported international markets.

That early access is giving us a practical view of how the channel operates, where the opportunity sits and, importantly, what brands need to have in place before they can take advantage of it.

What we are seeing suggests that the biggest mistake brands can make is waiting for launch day to start thinking about it.

The opportunity sits closer to the decision

The difference between search and conversational AI becomes obvious when you look at how people use them.

    A search query might be:

    “Best family SUV.”

    A ChatGPT conversation could be:

“I need an SUV for a family of five. We travel long distances regularly, safety is important, I need good boot space and I do not want something expensive to maintain. What should I consider?”

The person is no longer simply searching.

    They are narrowing a decision.

That conversation carries more context around their priorities, constraints and intended outcome.

For advertisers, that opens a new media opportunity: the ability to appear around a moment when someone is actively moving from consideration towards action.

ChatGPT Ads do not allow advertisers to buy or influence the answer itself. The response remains independent, with eligible sponsored placements appearing separately around the next action.

    That distinction matters.

The opportunity is not to pay to become the recommendation.

It is to be relevant when the consumer is ready to do something next.

This is not simply another place to put an ad

New channels often create the illusion that activation will be easy.

Open an account. Move some budget. Upload creative. Go live.

Our experience in the Beta suggests brands should think about ChatGPT Ads differently.

The media opportunity may be new, but the ability to take advantage of it depends on foundations that sit across the wider digital ecosystem.

Your content needs to clearly explain what you offer.

Your products and services need accurate, accessible information.

Your landing experience needs to support the promise being made.

Your measurement needs to connect advertising activity to meaningful business outcomes.

And your brand needs to understand how it already appears within AI-driven discovery and decision environments.

These are not problems marketers want to discover once the inventory becomes available.

They are problems that can be identified now.

The first advantage may happen before the first ad runs

There is a natural tendency to think about first-mover advantage as being first to spend.

That may not be where the real advantage sits.

Brands that use the preparation window now can understand their gaps, fix what matters and make informed decisions about where conversational advertising belongs in their customer journey.

Those that wait until access opens may spend the first stage of the opportunity trying to solve issues their competitors have already addressed.

That is why Red September is applying what we are learning from the Beta environment now.

We are helping brands assess six areas that could influence their readiness:

    • Technical accessibility
    • Content and brand clarity
    • Data and product feeds
    • Landing-page and policy readiness
    • Measurement and privacy
    • Current AI visibility

The objective is not to encourage brands to rebuild everything for a platform that is still developing.

It is to know what is ready, what is not, and what is worth prioritising before activation becomes urgent.

AI visibility is already part of the picture

Paid advertising is only one part of the shift.

Before a brand even considers ChatGPT Ads, there is another useful question to ask:

What does AI already know and say about your brand?

When consumers ask questions relevant to your category, do you appear?

    Which competitors are being surfaced?

Which sources are influencing the conversation?

Are your products, services and proof points being represented accurately?

    Where are the gaps?

Organic AI visibility and paid ChatGPT advertising are separate disciplines. Advertising cannot buy its way into an independent answer.

But from a strategic perspective, both sit inside the same changing customer journey.

Brands need to understand how they show up when customers are discovering and evaluating options, and how paid media could eventually support the next action.

That is a bigger opportunity than simply adding another channel to the media plan.

Search is not disappearing. The decision journey is expanding.

ChatGPT Ads should not be framed as the death of search.

    Search will remain important.

Social will continue to build awareness and shape demand.

Retail and commerce media will continue to influence people close to purchase.

    Conversational AI introduces another layer.

It can sit in the space where consumers are asking questions, comparing possibilities and trying to make sense of increasingly complicated decisions.

The question for marketers is therefore not:

    “What will ChatGPT Ads replace?”

    It is:

“Where could this become valuable in our customer's decision journey?”

Brands that can answer that question before broader access opens will be in a much stronger position than those starting from scratch when it does.

We are already inside the shift

There is still uncertainty around exactly how quickly ChatGPT Ads will expand, how the product will evolve and when access will reach South Africa.
But the shift in consumer behaviour is already happening.

    The Beta is already happening.

And brands can already start preparing for what comes next.

Red September is using its experience inside the ChatGPT Ads Beta environment to help brands understand the opportunity, identify their readiness gaps and build a practical roadmap towards activation.

Because when access opens, the most valuable question may not be:

    “How quickly can we launch?”

    It may be:

    “Why weren't we ready already?”
