Mobile movie guide

Ster-Kinekor yesterday, 30 May 2007, unveiled a mechanism to enable movie-goers to see what's showing anywhere in the country on their cellphones. The service is effectively an extension of that available on the company's website and uses wireless application protocol (WAP) technology to deliver programme information to consumer's cellphones.

Fiaz Mohamed, CEO Ster-Kinekor Theatres, says the service is being launched in two phases, the first of which has been available since yesterday. “Film buffs will be able to create, view and update their profiles on the website. They can also check cinema show times and view film synopses – all simply by using their mobile phones.”

The profile allows consumers to specify how they want Ster-Kinekor to communicate with them, amend contact and personal details as well as specify their preferred genres of films and name the complexes they frequent. Movie-goers can also subscribe to moviemail in order to receive all the latest movie information and competitions in their inbox.

Movieclub member's existing website profiles will already be available via the new platform while non-members will need to create new profiles – either via their cellphones or on the website.

“All they need is to have Internet access enabled and point their cell phonebrowser to www.sterkinekor.com. The rest is self-explanatory, with the same functionality on the website,” explains Mohamed.

Phase two of the project, which will enable film buffs to make their bookings using this service, is expected to go live in July. Currently, there are four ways for consumers to make their bookings: online ; via the contact centre (082 16789); at self-service terminals at cinemas; or at the box office.

“It's all part of our drive harness technology to enhance your movie-going experience, making it really convenient to find information about what's showing and book your seats,” adds Mohamed.
