Getting the youth involved

SABC Education's Walala Wasala aims to stimulate political debate amongst the youth with a no-nonsense approach to getting information across in an entertaining and informative way, promising no boring interviews or waffling politicians. Walala Wasala is produced by Kagiso Educational Television.

Made possible with funding from SABC Education and the Open Society Foundation of South Africa, the programme is scheduled for broadcast on SABC1 Thursdays at 6.30pm starting 29 September.

Producer Pauli van Dyk says: "National politics is sexy but local government is the nitty gritty of the community and it is here where the youth should be involved.

"We will have no party politics, only focus on local government. Our crew, accompanied with soapbox, spy cams and hidden cameras invite people from local communities to air their grievances, test processes and service levels."

Walala Wasala is not Jozi-centric. Urban areas will be included but the team will travel the country extensively and focus on villages and rural areas. To encourage youth involvement, they are invited to send contributions in the form of a videocassette on how local government in their area shapes up or not. These contributions will be screened as part of the programme.
