Radio & Audio News South Africa

Radio just ain't the same no more

What image does the word Radio conjure up in your mind's eye? A terrestrial station that transmits through large towers on AM or FM bands? You must be over 35. Younger folks think of audio streaming via computers and the hip and happening download radio shows for playback at their convenience on iPods, audio jukeboxes, cellphones and other digital devices.

Yep, radio just ain't the same anymore. Even down here at home in SA. ICASA has given us two huge clues that we need to start thinking differently about radio, what it has become and what it will evolve in to, in the form of The Convergence Bill and the position paper on the Ownership and Control of Broadcasting Services and Existing Commercial Sound Broadcasting Licences.

Kagiso Media, in association with Sentech, has decided that it is not too late to catch this radio wave. They are hosting a Commercial Radio Conference for new and emerging markets which will hopefully evolve into an annual event of the same calibre as the NAB radio conference.

The Kagiso Media Commercial Radio Conference will be held over two days, the 1st and 2nd of November at Caesars Gauteng, and will have something for everyone in the media, marketing and radio broadcasting industry. 15 local and international speakers ranging from the Chairman of ICASA, to Creative Directors, Production Experts and international Radio Consultants will address all aspects of commercial radio.

The topics include; How to create award winning, effective radio advertising by John Culverwell, Key traits of a successful programmes manager by Kevin Cassidy, Tips on an often neglected medium called Radio by Brett Morris, Studio & Systems design, secrets and tips by Steve Moss and The changing nature of news and information by Prof. Anton Harber.

The programme will also include a panel of drive-time jocks on the key ingredients of a successful drive time show, a Case Study on Yfm by Dirk Hartford and live demonstrations by the Radio Computing Services (RCS) team on the latest technology which can track advertising and music delivery at the click of the mouse.
