R90-million earmarked for jobs

A programme to train young people - known as Y-Age - has been launched by Gauteng's MEC for economic development Quedani Mahlangu and R90-million has been set-aside for the purpose.

The Sowetan reports that in terms of the programme, people will be trained in various business skills and if their plans for the future meet the required funding criteria, they will receive funding of between R500 000 and R1-million to start a business.

The people who will undergo training include those with an existing business, those with ideas for a business or those who have had a business that failed due to a lack of funding.

The would-be entrepreneurs will have to register on a provincial website or mobisite and, if they are selected, will have to pay R500 as a "commitment fee". Gauteng Enterprise Propellor outlets and kiosks at malls will be used to help people register.

The province is home to about 3,6-million unemployed youths.
