3D FHM a first for South Africa?

FHM's December birthday issue, which celebrates its 10th birthday in 3D, is reportedly the first consumer magazine to use this technology in South Africa. To enable readers to view the 3D pages properly, a special pair of 3D glasses forms part of the package.
Lee-Ann Liebenberg is the “FHM Girl of the Decade”.

Out now, according to editor Hagen Engler, it offers readers “images that look great without the glasses, but come to luminous life in three dimensions when viewed with the accompanying FHM Babe Goggles. The longer one wears the glasses, the better the effect.”

When planning began in February this year, it was just a far-off and risky idea. As brand owner UCM experimented with various technological options in 3D rendering during the year, the company eventually decided to create its own technology to convert existing material into modern 3D.

Numerous advertisers bought into the 3D innovation and UCM Creative Solutions offered clients a 3D conversion service for existing ad material. The cover, back page and insert poster all feature Lee-Ann Liebenberg as the “FHM Girl of the Decade,” to add make this a collector's magazine.

This 212-plus page issue is one of the most successful ever in terms of advertising income, says UCM COO Kim Browne. “It's amazing to look back at 10 years as South Africa's leading men's lifestyle media brand, while publishing one of the highest income magazines of its first decade. In these tough economic times, we're proud of our important place in the hearts and minds of our loyal brand fans and advertising partners."

Online at www.fhm.co.za, the 3D special is expanded with many additional images and other elements such as 3D wallpaper downloads.
