Deal website gets new look

The site onedayonly.co.za has added technologies in its revamp to keep up its leader status in deal websites in South Africa. Launched three years ago by Christian Oberhofer and Maurits Vermeulen, it specialises in daily-deal-specials. The new-look site goes live on 24 July.

"The new site has responsive design that 'automagically' adapts to our visitor's device - so no need for different sites for different devices," says Vermeulen. "It contains the latest in internet coding standards, optimising compatibility with a huge number of devices and screen resolutions, to ensure the new site is cutting edge for at least another six months before newer technology catches us up."

Following a simple business plan of offering a single product per day for the lowest price that one will legally find anywhere and based on consistently solid sales turnover, the site has built good relationships with its suppliers, ensuring that they never have to resort to group-buying to keep the deals as low as possible. Therefore, in the unlikely event of only one person taking up the offer on a day, the price and deal are still valid and available.

"We aim to offer a great mix of superior quality merchandise, aggressively discounted, on a daily basis," adds Oberhofer. "Offers are kept simple: customers are fed just one deal, accompanied by a witty narrative. We believe our irreverent style throughout to be of cardinal importance, for no matter how well thought-out our product mix might be, it will never appeal to everyone every single day. Therefore, the need to entertain, even when the product doesn't, is fully appreciated."

Humour pays

The site has reportedly become well known for its flippant and quirky personality that has always focused more on wit and humour rather than simply selling a product. The narrator is generally a 30-something Cape Town male, easily distracted, with a horrible sense of humour, who goes out a lot and loves every new gadget. The new site stays loyal to this personality, but focuses clearly on the product of the day, with an uncluttered layout and great ease of use, presenting only the information that the customer needs and wants to see.

Being a small company - only five employees - and running two distribution centres, one in Cape Town and one in Gauteng, the site has been able to keep its overheads low, which is again reflected in the deals it is able to offer daily.
