    DA to protest SABC alleged bias

    As part of a nationwide campaign to highlight alleged bias in the SABC's television news reporting and to put pressure on the broadcaster to take proactive steps to address the situation, the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng will be holding a public gathering outside the SABC's provincial offices today, Tuesday, 1 August 2006.

    The DA event in Gauteng is one of five similar, simultaneous events that will also be occurring on 1 August at other regional SABC offices in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.

    This follows on from the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF), at its AGM on 10 July 2006, calling for its members to become involved in the independent commission of inquiry into allegations of editorial impropriety within the SABC news division.

    The commission set aside three days - 21, 22 and 24 July 2006 - in which submissions from 19 people were heard and has since adjourned to August.

    To assist with its work, commissioner Zwelakhe Sisulu and fellow commissioner Advocate Gilbert Marcus, have enlisted Rhodes Journalism Professor Guy Berger, who was recently awarded the 2006 Nat Nakasa Award, as an expert resource.
