It is part of a major international plan to expand digital access to users in India, China and Brazil. The Indian government has undertaken to buy the tablet computers at $50 each from a British company, DataWind that developed the device and is now assembling it in India.
India's telecommunications and education minister, Kapil Sibal says 100 000 units will be provided to students for free.
From next year the government will sell the units to students for $35 each while a retail version of the computer will be sold in shops for $60. It uses the Google Android operating system and resistive LCD displays and connects via wireless broadband connections.
