Ninety-eight percent of UCT's MBChB's pass
The graduating class of the MBChB degree programme for 2011 at the University of Cape Town has achieved a pass rate of 97.7 percent. A total of 171 students graduated with a medical degree, 36 with distinction.
Included is Vuyane Mhlomi from Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, who is graduating third in his class with an average of 76.6 percent in his final year of study for the medical degree. Despite coming from an educationally disadvantaged background, he completed the degree in the minimum time of six years.
The first and second places in the class were both achieved by women. Kate McMullen led with an average of 78.4 percent in the final year, followed by Juanita Becker with 78.1 percent.
Fifty-five students achieved an average of 70 percent or more in their final year and 114 achieved an average of 60 to 69 percent.
