#MusicExchange: Lee Cole releases new single "Honey, Let Me In"

Johannesburg-based singer-songwriter Lee Cole has been steadily making his musical presence known as one pristinely produced pop song at a time.

Still riding the wave of success his previous two singles “I Don’t Wanna Wait” and “Pink Dragons”, which charted on the country’s major radio stations. Cole has returned with his brand new single “Honey, Let Me In”.

He wrote this single after a friend of his described his experience to him. He was at his significant other’s home and he described the feeling of being with her as euphoric; something he didn’t want to end. “And that’s what ‘Honey, Let Me In’ is about. You’re with someone you love dearly and you just want them to stay with you, in that moment – forever,” explains Cole as he delves into the theme of the new single.

Cole and I had a chat recently.

    The new decade means:

Everyone, and my gran, buying bitcoin and electric cars.

    Fame is about:

Getting to stroke your ego every night before bedtime while forgetting you have four limbs like everybody else.

    Retirement will happen when:

I feel I’ve achieved as much as I can.

    I don't do:

    Pineapple on pizza.

What does music mean to you?

Everything, really. It’s what I’m meant to do.

    My music is about:

Soul-searching and being honest with yourself.

I would love to co-write with:

    Billie Eilish or Adele.

Where do you go for inspiration to create?

It just comes on the fly, to be honest. It’s very hard to explain.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

To see the reaction on people’s faces when I’ve got them in their feels. It, in return, gets me in mine.

The song you must do in every show?

    Probably “Pink Dragons”.

    Any funny moments on stage:

Plenty. I once forgot the lyrics to the Afrikaans part of the anthem at a gig.

    My style icon:

Hard to say, but probably Adam Levine.

What is your most treasured possession?

Family heirlooms have been passed down to me.

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

A cold, steamy glass of government juice (water).

    What makes you stand out?

I would probably say my vocal tone. It’s recognisable I’ve been told.

    Nicknames:

Everyone calls me Lee. Since I was a little boy.

If you were not a musician, what would you do?

Probably something in the psychology field. I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff.

Who would play you in a Hollywood blockbuster and why?

I would probably be played by Ryan Reynolds. I feel like we have a similar sense of humour.

Pick five words to describe yourself:

    Honest, passionate, clown, driven, real.

Five favourite SA albums of all time:

Prime Circle - Jekyll and Hyde

    Merseystate - The Lucky Ones
    Juluka - Scatterlings
    Parlotones - Dragonflies and Astronauts
    Watershed - Mosaic

    What song changed your life?

My song “I Don’t Wanna Wait”.

    What is your favourite word?

    Favourite word would be ‘saucy’.

    Favourite fashion garment:

    Blazers for sure.

Give us some real proper slang and what it means:

My brother and I refer to someone dying as ‘pegging’. Sometimes literally, sometimes metaphorically.

    Your greatest achievement:

So far I’m only just starting but I would say the greatest achievement thus far has been staying true to myself and what I wanted out of life.

What do you complain about most often?

    People and their driving.

    What is your fear?

    To just be ordinary.

    On stage, I tend to:

Move around quite a bit. I also tend to close my eyes very often.

Do you do charity work and, if you do, what do you do?

I sometimes do free gigs for charity organisations to help raise funds. My most recent one was for the Cupcakes of Hope organisation for children with cancer.

    Wishes and dreams:

To be happy and to have a healthy family.
