Arrival of the virtual car showroom

Platypus Productions recently completed a six-month project for Car magazine, creating a virtual showroom for potential car buyers.

Platypus Productions customised a studio with a motorised revolve and a two-sided infinity curve with a lighting rig. The idea behind Car Buyers Guide is to bring South Africans a new way to view cars in an unglamourised, uncommerical way.

Says Stanley Edwards, director of Platypus Productions, “To ensure that the potential buyer gets information and insight that is objective and unbiased, we filmed each and every car in exactly the same way in studio and on the road.”

Car Buyers Guide can be found on CAR's website, www.Cartoday.com. Once logged into the site, potential buyers can browse according to their preferred brand and budget, helping them to choose a vehicle. Once they have made a selection, a video will automatically play, detailing the exact specs of the chosen vehicle. The menu also offers potential buyers tours of the interior and exterior of the vehicle they picked as well, as the additional service of offering price quotes and insurance rates. This information is also available to download to mobile phones.

Says Stuart Lowe of Car, “Car Buyers Guide is in line with Car magazine's strategy to enhance our offering to both manufacturers and our reader. As new media and the web become more prevalent, publishers need to evolve with the times.”
