Dreamworks acquired the remake rights to The Ring and successfully produced a hit horror film. The Ring has grossed more than $128 million in the United States and has earned more than R5 million to date at the South African box office. The remake rights to another of Nakata's films, Chaos was recently acquired by Universal Pictures.
Don't Look Up is set in the vast and decrepit film stages of a rundown studio outside Tokyo and charts the unraveling sanity of a director and his crew when the spirit of a murdered actress from another era comes to possess a random piece of celluloid that is left behind. The old images invade the film stock of the contemporary production, and in a few stark frames, they open a horrifying window on the terrible, haunting deeds of the past.
Commenting on the acquisition of the remake rights, Singh said, "Of all the Nakata films I have seen, Don't Look Up and The Ring are truly the most frightening. Don't Look Up, however, is the one that really gets under your skin, and the subject matter of a haunted piece of film is a perfect match for a Hollywood remake."
Singh also announced that a top writer of horror screenplays will be brought on board to complete an English adaptation of the screenplay and that a number of Hollywood studios have indicated an interest in the remake of Don't Look Up.
