Media Innovation Awards announced
The inaugural Media Innovation Awards are presented by the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), in partnership with the Open Society Foundation of South Africa (OSF-SA) and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-SA) and are designed to showcase and reward innovative strategies, tools and other business solutions for the grassroots or community publishing sector.
Awards will be made in the following six categories: Innovative Editorial / Content Systems, Innovative Management / Business Systems, Innovative Circulation / Distribution Systems, Innovative Revenue Generation Initiatives, Innovative Advertising / Marketing Strategies and Innovative Audience / Market Research.
Each category will focus on the often hidden systems or technologies that enable newspapers to survive and thrive. Nominations can include everything from software or other tools designed to make grassroots publishing more competitive, to creative strategies or production techniques for overcoming common problems, or even new products that cut costs and give grassroots publishers a competitive edge.
Prize packages are valued at roughly R20 000 each, and include free technical training, software products, consultants to help improve profitability/efficiency at winning publications and free resources including media textbooks/manuals.
The deadline is 31 August 2005 and winners will be announced during a banquet at the Small Media Summit at the Intercontinental Sandton Sun & Towers Hotel in Johannesburg on 16 September 2005.
The Small Media Summit will run over three days and will include technical skills training workshops, policy roundtables, a Media Expo showcasing media development and training bodies, as well as the annual general meetings of the AIP, Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ), and CAPRO advertising sales house.
