SA scores four D&AD Yellow Pencils

LONDON: At the D&AD Global Awards 2007 last night in London, Thursday, 24 May 2007, South Africa received four of the 59 Yellow Pencils, awarded from 151 nominated entries. Graphic Design and Viral juries awarded the most, with seven Pencils handed out in each. An illustration and, for the second year running, a website, were awarded the only two Black Pencils.

Judges bestowed one of the rarest prizes in advertising and design to Nike+ (www.nikeplus.com) by R/GA in New Uses of Websites and ‘War Orphans' in Illustration: Press Advertising by Kolle Rebbe Werbeagentur GmbH.

“This is the second time a Black Pencil has been awarded in the Websites category, which saw a huge increase in entries this year. Overall, not a classic year, however what is interesting is that one of my favourite pieces was heavily technology-led. Nike+ challenges its category. It's a totally integrated consumer experience that redefines the running industry,' said D&AD president Tony Davidson.

“It's been a while since Illustration picked up a Black Pencil, but the simple idea behind the campaign for ‘War Orphans' made the jury's decision easy. Naïve family wall paintings they may be, but seeing where shells of bullets have shattered the images is a great and easily understood metaphor.”
