Design is for one and all

I'm not going to rabbit on much about Design Indaba in this editorial column, as I'm saving it for the special edition newsletter which we will be putting out later this week (hint: send your press releases and gallery contributions for editorial consideration by end of Tuesday afternoon for possible inclusion, or forever hold your peace).

What I will say is that, once again, it was a well-run, thought-provoking and inspiring conference that was jam-packed with wonderful ideas showcasing how design is truly cross-discipline and should be part of everything we do. And the Design Indaba expo was crammed with the most wonderful, high quality South African design and craft, so much so that I'm still not sure I saw everything, despite having spent at least five hours perusing it over three separate occasions.

Coinciding with Design Indaba was the official launch of the new Brand Council of South Africa, which incorporates the Brand Design Council (formerly known as THINK). Its identity was also unveiled, a bold stylised 'zigzag' emblem designed by Grid.

So who's won what recently? The big news is that Edgars has gone to M&C Saatchi Abel and Foodcorp has found a new home with Joe Public.

Last but not least, the 2012 Biz Trends Report is now available for downloading in pdf format (3.8MB). To the 70-odd contributors who sent in their trends, packed with insight and advice, in response to my invitation, a heartfelt thank you to you all - you leave me speechless at your generosity in sharing your knowledge with the wider biz community.

Happy reading!
Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz)

[Design Indaba 2012] Invest in people
[Anton Crone] Coincidentally, while thousands at Design Indaba last week were being inspired by bold urban design that challenges our thinking, the former mayor of Bogota, Columbia, was challenging urban development policies at a conference in Stellenbosch. Screened during the Design Indaba week, the documentary Urbanized expounded on Enrique Peñasola's initiatives. As bold and controversial as these are, the benefits to the citizens are profound. As he states, "We invested in people." Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2012] Cities that speak
[Terry Levin] One of the dominant themes to have emerged from Design Indaba 2012, held as usual during the last week of February, at Cape Town's CTICC, might be said to be one of a new kind of assisted or enhanced intelligence - with almost every presenter demonstrating the new narrative and emotive potentials of digital interfaces to connect. #bankwars: if this is a case study, what does it illustrate?
[Walter Pike] I have a slide in my deck which I often pull out when I want to talk about how advertising has lost much of its power. It's a research-based index of the trustworthiness of various professions. There is no surprise that, at the bottom of list, taking pride of place as the least trustworthy of all professions are politicians. Second from the bottom are advertising specialists...
