Permanent patrols in Mozambique Channel
There have been 17 piracy events in Tanzanian waters and Business Live says that international shipping lines are seriously concerned about the safety of their vessels as they transit east African waters according to Defence Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu.
She says the reason for the increase in incidents in east African waters is that Somali pirates are finding it difficult to capture ships because of the widespread presence of international patrols off Somalia.
South Africa has already deployed one of its frigates in the Mozambique Channel following an agreement between South Africa and Mozambique that allows the navy to patrol there.
Vessels carrying 30% of the world's oil supplies and 98% of South Africa's freight use the Mozambique Channel.
