Beeping bank wars

On Thursday evening, 23 February 2012, when I caught wind of what has been nicknamed the #bankwars, my first reaction was to *wince* and tweet that "[t]his banking blowup on Twitter is just thoroughly cringeworthy. I see even @nedbank uttered green something inane" (see this retweet to understand why). I also likened it to the teen-mag cat fight over ABCs that happened on Bizcommunity several years ago.

Walter Pike has begun dissecting what happened in "#bankwars - Standard Bank tries to do a Frankies" and I'm looking forward to part II later this week; TechCentral gives Standard Bank's side of the story; and Tiffany Markman has shared her experience of FNB's breaking its brand promise to her. As various commentators on Twitter remarked, this is going to be one of those case studies that we hear and read about ad nauseum - until the next big screw-up.

Talking about ABCs, the Q4 2011 figures are now out and Gill Moodie last week gave us the lowdown on newspaper circulations and this week will give us the magazine figures.

On the radio side, we're gearing up for April Fool's Day, when the stations announce their full DJ lineup shuffles and we listeners all think it's a joke until we realise that it's not and start howling. We've already had some appetisers: we know that Sasha Martinengo is out and that Anele Mdoda is going back to Highveld, while her partner Grant Nash is retiring from radio (which reminds me of this gem of a tweet from the parody account @Steve_Beep_Bank: "Who do you hate more Grant, Anele or me? #StevesPoll").

Happy Design Indaba this week! I'll be there, tweeting up a storm until my thumbs give out from RSI!

All the best

The rise of the sentient enterprise
[Godfrey Parkin] How efficiently does your organisation think? Whether you are a 40 000 employee corporate or a five-person start-up, if you cannot sense what is going on in your competitive environment, cannot analyse and interpret that input, and cannot make the right decisions or act appropriately in real-time, your enterprise is poorly equipped to thrive in socially networked markets. What social media's leaderless revolutions have to gain from old-fashioned branding
[Maja Rode] The common thread running through events such as the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street is the same thing that sets them apart from anything we've seen in history: they are leaderless. Or, in the words of a communications professional: unbranded. Without leaders, where do these movements really lead? Where is the accountability, the legitimacy, the promise of a better future? Where, in short, is the brand? Read more >>

#bankwars - Standard Bank tries to do a Frankies
[Walter Pike] I was speaking at an event on Thursday afternoon, 23 February 2012, about the changing media landscape and the inability of companies to control the conversation, the need to listen and understand the discussion and what is happening in the community, and rather the need to facilitate the discussion. Afterwards, I checked my Twitter stream - and saw the start of the Standard Bank/FNB firestorm. It was almost as if they had done it to help me make my point. Read more >>

But is it lies? 'Steve' vs Standard Bank
[Tiffany Markman] I seldom pick sides in fights such as #bankwars. Barring an ambivalent flip through the twitterverse to find out who hates who and get a glimmer of insight into why, I wait for the cacophonous twysteria to die down; for my stream to return to 'normal'. But this time, I have a definite bias. Read more >>

[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] The death of print is much predicted and if you look at the numbers - such as the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) figures for the last quarter of 2011 that were released in Cape Town this week - it is a sorry picture of consistent decline for the newspapers. Six ways agency owners can do better PR
[Roger Hislop] Screeds have been written by PRs on how terribly PR is done, and by journalists on how terribly PR is being done. Generally, these pieces address the symptoms, not the causes. So what's wrong? How do PR pros run PR agencies that do (let's be blunt) crap work? Agencies which let junior staff with no clue and big attitudes loose on heavyweight journos from top-tier publications? Agencies that issue releases that are borderline incomprehensible?
