Catching up on new ideas - the new Design Indaba publication,
Where It's At, the first in a series of limited editions inspired by
Design Indaba magazine, now discontinued, is one option. Another is to attend the Salon Privé at
Design Indaba Expo 2012, a separate exhibition area within the main exhibition, focusing on the very best of high-end South African design.
Designers decide where it's at
The new publication, guest edited by Richard Hart and designed by Disturbance, is the first in a series of interpretations by Design Indaba's extended design network.
This limited edition of 3000 copies, featuring articles, profiles, conversations and bespoke, fold-out posters, is a snapshot of contemporary South African design and how it plays out in a global context.
It includes:
- An overview of the South African creative community, including a directory of key players and an overview of prevailing trends
- A series of profiles of emerging designers, as nominated by established industry leaders
- Conversations between leading South African creatives who have taken their talents to the world stage
- Opinions on Africa from international design commentators including Julie Lasky and Lynda Relph-Knight
- Proposals from leading South African designers on creating a better Africa
In addition to this reading material, Hart has also commissioned 28 South African artists and designers to create posters that are included within the pages of the publication. Each two-colour, gatefold poster adds a tangible, illustrative quality to the ideas and debates under discussion. The publication's dustcover is a full-colour, folded design that opens up to reveal a map of Africa.
The publication serves to take stock of where South African design is today and forces readers to ask where it is headed into the future. South Africa's creative resources should be the country's greatest export and it is important to get a sense of where we are today in order to achieve this dream.
Future Design Indaba publications could take on any number of forms - DVD, documentary, coffee-table book, poster collection or an audio file. Format neutral, its fundamental goal is to embody innovative ways to bring thought leadership to its audience. As these subsequent versions are still in the realm of dialogue, the organisers are open to suggestions and ideas.

Salon Privé is independently curated and features iconic work, representing the country's design groundswell, to the world. It is an exclusive area in the form of a colonnaded gallery situated at the centre of the Expo floor, near the Grolsch bar.
