Business Report says that Premier Zweli Mkhize announced the increase in his State of the Province address in the Pietermaritzburg legislature on Tuesday.

He referred to the major projects being undertaken by Transnet to improve the ports of Durban and Richards Bay that will see the parastatal investing more than R80bn in the province over the next seven years.

Mkhize says a priority project currently under investigation is the establishment of a railway link from King Shaka Airport to Durban with stations at Ballito and Umhlanga. Moreover a new business express train service between Pietermaritzburg and Durban is part of a R5bn investment in the railway network. The express service will start operating in April.

He says that Eskom will invest at least R22bn in the province through projects such as the Ingula Pump Station in the Drakensburg that will see 1300MW of electricity being provided to the national grid once it is completed in 2014.
