30-million passengers used SA's airports

Almost 30-million passengers used South Africa's airports between April 2011 and January 2012 and News24 quotes figures from the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) that indicate improved air travel despite tough economic conditions.

Acsa says that traffic was boosted over the summer period at Cape Town International Airport where international passenger travel increased by 12% in November last year and 17% in December and January this year, compared with the same periods a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Business Day - using the same figures - says that more than 5-million passengers passed through King Shaka airport last year and the increase in passengers was driven, in part, by the introduction of Velvet Sky.

It says that new routes from King Shaka have been opened, including a flight to Lusaka, Zambia and a route to Dallas, Texas. Demand for flights to other African countries proved resilient last year with demand for premium and economy class tickets rising at near double-digit rates.
