Time Out has expanded its South African footprint with the launch of Time Out Durban, bringing its global city-guide proposition to KwaZulu-Natal and creating a new platform for discovering the city's businesses, experiences and cultural scene.

Launched on 31 August 2026, Time Out Durban is the third South African city edition under a franchise partnership with Kagiso Media Radio (KMR), following Time Out Cape Town and Time Out Johannesburg, which launched in 2025.

The expansion comes as Durban gains increasing international attention, with Time Out's global travel survey ranking the city among the world's best places to visit in 2026.

Local discovery meets global reach

Time Out Durban will focus on the city's food, drink, culture, nightlife, neighbourhoods, family experiences and outdoor activities, while also extending its coverage to destinations and experiences across KwaZulu-Natal.

Content will be delivered across web, mobile, email and social platforms, alongside live experiences.

The platform will be curated by local writers, creatives and cultural voices, reflecting Time Out's model of combining international brand recognition with local editorial expertise.

“Durban is a city with such a distinct personality and an incredibly rich mix of culture, food, creativity, entertainment and outdoor experiences,” says Aisha Mohamed, managing director of Time Out South Africa.

“There is always something happening, but part of the challenge for both locals and visitors is knowing where to look and what is genuinely worth experiencing.”

For businesses in the city's hospitality, retail, entertainment and tourism sectors, the arrival of a dedicated city guide provides another platform through which to reach consumers actively looking for things to do and places to visit.

Building a discovery platform for Durban

Founded in London in 1968, Time Out now reaches audiences across more than 350 cities in more than 50 countries.

Its model is based on local knowledge, with city guides designed to reflect the people, businesses and experiences that shape each destination.

Time Out Durban will apply the same approach, covering everything from major restaurant openings and headline events to neighbourhood businesses, markets, beaches, nightlife and family activities.

The platform will also highlight road trips and destinations across KwaZulu-Natal, giving visitors and residents a broader view of the province.

“The people of a city tell its stories best,” says Mohamed. “The most important part of our work is capturing the unique stories that show what truly makes Durban exciting.”

An opportunity for local businesses

The launch also has implications for Durban's broader visitor economy.

As consumers increasingly use digital platforms to discover restaurants, entertainment, retail and leisure experiences, curated city-guide content can help businesses compete for attention in an increasingly crowded market.

For independent restaurants, neighbourhood businesses, cultural organisations and emerging creative ventures, being part of a platform centred on discovery could provide additional exposure beyond traditional advertising channels.

Time Out Durban's focus on local voices also creates an opportunity to broaden the city's narrative beyond its established tourist attractions, bringing attention to smaller businesses and experiences embedded within local communities.

“We have continued to build a platform that combines Time Out's global authority with genuine local knowledge,” says Mohamed. “Our ambition has always been to create useful, relevant and inspiring content that helps people experience the very best of the places in which they live or visit.”

Durban joins a growing South African platform

The Durban launch strengthens Time Out South Africa's ambition to develop a national destination for city discovery, building on its Cape Town and Johannesburg platforms.

For Durban, the timing is significant. With international interest in the city growing, the new platform arrives at a point when local businesses and tourism operators have an opportunity to showcase a broader range of experiences to both domestic and international audiences.

Ultimately, Time Out Durban is positioning itself as more than a traditional city guide. By connecting local editorial, digital discovery, culture, hospitality and live experiences, the platform aims to become part of the ecosystem through which people decide where to eat, what to see and how to experience Durban.

As Mohamed puts it, the objective is to celebrate the people, places and experiences that make the city distinctive – while helping audiences discover Durban from the inside out.
