As climate change, water scarcity and urbanisation place increasing pressure on South Africa's food system, one Western Cape agri-tech startup is taking a different approach to how fresh produce could reach consumers – by growing it inside shipping containers.

Arable Grow is combining hydroponics, climate-controlled environments and renewable energy to create modular urban farms capable of producing fresh produce closer to where consumers live.
The business is already supplying Spar retailers in the Western Cape, providing a retail route to market for a farming model designed around resource efficiency and local production.
The concept challenges the traditional agricultural supply chain, where produce is often grown far from urban centres before travelling significant distances to reach supermarket shelves.
Arable Grow's container farms can instead be positioned closer to consumers, enabling crops to be grown throughout the year under controlled conditions and delivered to retailers within hours of harvesting.
Farming with less water and waste
The company's modular farms use hydroponic growing systems and approximately 95% less water than conventional farming, while eliminating the need for pesticides.
The controlled environment also allows Arable Grow to produce according to demand, helping limit surplus and food waste. Any excess produce can be dehydrated and converted into nutrient-rich superfood powder, extending its shelf life and creating an additional revenue stream from crops that might otherwise go to waste.
Renewable energy and water-retention systems form part of the operation, with the technology developed largely in-house to respond to South African conditions.
For founder and CEO Hein Duvenhage, the objective is not simply to develop another way of growing vegetables, but to create an agricultural model suited to Africa's future needs.

“The big idea was to build a business that makes a difference and use innovation and technology to develop a solution designed specifically for Africa,” says Duvenhage.
“We're trying to solve a high nutritional density problem in urban environments while building a farming model that is more sustainable, more efficient and better suited to the future.”
Turning agri-tech into a retail proposition
Developing the technology was only one part of Arable Grow's journey. Establishing market access and meeting the requirements of formal retail presented another significant hurdle for the startup.
Its partnership with Spar has helped bridge that gap.
As Arable Grow's first retail partner, Spar supported the business through its Supplier Development Programme, providing guidance to help it achieve Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) certification and strengthen its operational capabilities.
The relationship has enabled Arable Grow to move from an innovative farming concept into a commercial supplier operating within the formal grocery market.
“Our product offering is unique, and because it's something new, people don't always understand it immediately,” says Duvenhage. “The partnership with Spar has given us exactly the kind of backing a startup needs.”
He adds that Spar's endorsement has provided credibility while helping the business access opportunities that could otherwise have taken years to develop.
For the retailer, the relationship illustrates how supplier development can support innovation while strengthening the local food supply chain.

For grocery retailers, locally produced food can offer benefits that extend beyond supporting entrepreneurship.
Shorter supply chains can potentially improve freshness and reduce transport-related costs and emissions, while controlled production provides an alternative way of managing some of the seasonal and environmental risks associated with conventional agriculture.
Arable Grow's model also offers the potential for production to be located closer to areas of demand, creating a more decentralised approach to fresh food supply.
The company's partnership with Spar therefore represents a meeting point between agricultural innovation and retail distribution – with the supermarket providing market access and the startup bringing a new production model to the supply chain.
From Somerset West to a national network
Arable Grow currently supplies Spar retailers in the Western Cape, but the company's ambitions extend beyond the province.
Rather than relying on a small number of large centralised farming operations, the business envisages a network of modular container farms operating across South African cities and towns.
“We want to demonstrate that vertical farming isn't just possible in South Africa, it's scalable,” says Duvenhage.
“If we can establish container farms in communities across the country using technology designed for Africa, we believe we can play a meaningful role in strengthening food security while creating a more sustainable future.”
The company is also investing in the next generation of agricultural thinking through a partnership with Beaumont Primary School in Somerset West, where learners are being introduced to urban farming.
For Arable Grow, the container is therefore more than an unconventional farm. It represents a potential new link in the food supply chain – one where production, sustainability and retail are brought closer together.
