Deadline looms for Mondi Shanduka Newspaper entries

The closing date for entries in South Africa's most prestigious newspaper journalism competition is 11 February 2005. The best journalism voted outstanding in each category will win the entrant a R10 000 cash prize, the coveted golden Mondi Shanduka Nib trophy and a framed certificate.

Journalists are invited to enter into the following categories: Breaking News; Analysis, Follow-ups and Commentary; Feature Writing; Investigative Journalism; Creative Journalism; Graphical Journalism; News Photographs; Feature Photographs and Presentation (Layout and Design).

The competition is open to all newspaper journalists employed on a full-time or freelance basis by a South African newspaper. Entries must consist of the journalist's own work which has been published in South African daily or weekly newspapers between 1 January 2004 and 1 January 2005.

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint and the Newspaper Association of South Africa (NASA) are also calling for nominations for the first Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Lifetime Achiever Award, a new award that will honour newspaper journalists who have made a significant contribution towards furthering the interests of newspaper journalism in South Africa over a career of at least 20 years. The winner will have demonstrated impeccable ethics and craft excellence, resulting in journalism that has enriched South African public life. Where the person's accomplishment has been achieved in the face of obstacles, this will add to the nominee's ratings.

The winner will be announced at the MSNA awards ceremony on 20 April 2005 at the Sandton Sun. Call for entries booklets (print and electronic PDF) are available from NASA. Contact Cathy Pestana on Tel: +27 +11 721-3200/1/2 or email: .
