Y'ello signage brings street names back into Soweto

In February 2004 Cyril Ramaphosa was joined by business and community leaders to celebrate the successful launch and implementation of the Street Name Ads pilot project in Soweto.

A joint initiative with the Johannesburg Roads Agency and the Johannesburg City Council, and driven by substantial financial contribution from headline sponsor MTN, Street Name Ads has erected over 5000 street name signs in Soweto over the past three months.

Street Name Ads and MTN are literally transforming the lives of township communities, facilitating for the first time in many years, prompt delivery of emergency and community services, increased crime prevention and promotion of the development of commercial and tourist outlets in township areas.

Santie Botha, group executive director at MTN says, "Initiatives of this nature are important for social upliftment in the communities within which MTN operates. Now emergency services, the police and visitors can easily find their way in and around Soweto. We have embarked on this initiative to instill a sense of freedom and pride in the Soweto Community."

The enormous success of the Street Name Ads initiative to date would not have been possible without the backing of Private Sector players such as MTN.

"This is no doubt a community upliftment initiative; it will go a long way towards establishing fundamental infrastructures within communities in need. For the Private Sector, it's an opportunity to simultaneously secure brand exposure to the millions of consumers that are resident in our township communities," says Brent Herbert, director of Street Name Ads. "On behalf of Street Name Ads, we extend particular thanks to MTN for their vision and support, and look forward to their continued future involvement."

And with a national roll out of the Street Name Ads initiative imminent, the estimated 15 million residents in townships throughout South Africa are set to reap the benefits.
