Wipro donates R100,000 to Slovo Centre of Excellence
Earlier this year, Wipro had contributed the proceeds raised from the tenth edition of the company's 'Spirit of Wipro Run' event to the SCE.
Located near an informal settlement in Slovo Park, on the boundaries of the Crosby and Coronationville suburbs of Johannesburg, the SCE is a ten-year old after-care facility to support the pre-school and after-school activities for disadvantaged children in the area.
Founded by Lorraine Cockrell and supported by a group of volunteers and a small team of staff, the facility provides a warm cooked meal every day, constructive educational and social support, and encourages children to participate in sports activities. The programme helps the children improve their proficiency in English, Mathematics and Science whilst providing them with emotional and social support.
Making a difference
"Contributing towards education is a cause close to our heart and in line with Wipro's long-term commitment to social and community initiatives. We have been associated with the SCE for three years now and are delighted to be given an opportunity to make a difference," said Gavin Holme, country manager for Africa at Wipro.
"The year-end is that time when we really need every bit of support and yet again, Wipro has provided us with some much needed funding," commented Cockrell. "In addition to the donation received in September during the 'Spirit of Wipro Run', this amount will also be utilised to improve our general operations. It will also assist us with our investment into Brain Boosters, an educational programme that focuses on a new way of teaching for early childhood development."
