Investec celebrates a decade of excellence with Promaths

Promaths, Investec's academic programme for learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 saw staff members and alumni board the Rovos Rail to celebrate 10 years in education development and empowerment...

Promaths provides additional intensive tuition to learners studying maths and physical science - gateway subjects for students wanting to pursue careers in commerce or the sciences. The last 10 years has seen this programme enable approximately 2,600 learners matriculate with decent passes in maths and science through the programme.

For years the prevailing deficiencies in maths and physical science has been a large constraint in ensuring that South Africa's human capital is fully aligned to the country's economic growth and development goals. Investec is proud to be investing in a long-term programme that not only supports the country's secondary schooling system, but one that addresses an urgent need to enhance and expand South Africa's economic and social landscape.

Realising that having a good maths and physical science pass in matric is only the beginning of a long academic and professional journey, Investec launched a CSI bursary programme aimed at facilitating access to quality tertiary education for students with academic potential and financial need. Ten years after the establishment of this programme, many have been able to pursue their academic aspirations.

With a national footprint, the programme has been twofold - assisting learners in realising their full potential while simultaneously raising the quality of passes in maths and science.

Speaking at the celebratory event Setlogane Manchidi of Investec CSI said: "Ten years since the establishment of both these programmes is a significant milestone, one characterised by positive change in people's lives and making a meaningful contribution in society. Today's celebrations are about all those whose lives have been touched by these programmes. We are truly encouraged and humbled by the tenacity and achievements of all our beneficiaries."

Of the 192 Dobsonville Promaths learners who wrote the 2014 matric exam, 94 achieved distinctions in maths. Of the 192 learners, 175 wrote physical science and 85 obtained distinctions.
