Top 100 tech companies urged to help young engineers: Pandor

Speaking to Engineering News Online, science and technology minister Naledi Pandor said that she will urge South Africa's Top 100 technology companies to take young engineers for experiential workplace training. This, said Pandor, is an expansion of her department's existing programme, set to get work places for newly graduated engineers so that they can obtain the required practical experience.

Pandor said that it is very important South Africa has qualified engineers. "They must achieve full qualification status. They must complete their experiential workplace learning. So we decided to invest in young people and talk to the business sector. The response was incredible," she said.

The programme was started by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in February last year and partnered with engineering companies, providing support for young engineers to complete their training. To date, the department has invested more than R20-million in the programme, enabling 90 young engineers to undergo workplace training.
