Helen Zille calls on SA to fight Secrecy Bill through petition
Helen Zille, leader of the DA, has called on South Africans to sign yet another petition against the Secrecy Bill and encourage friends and family to do the same, as part of the party's multi-faceted campaign against the Bill.
There are already petitions from Right2Know and Avaaz.
She states a sustained increase in public pressure may be what it takes to get the ANC to withdraw the bill in its current form.
In her open letter, she says, "South Africa witnessed an epoch-defining moment last month when the ANC rammed the Protection of State Information Bill (POSIB) through the National Assembly. One day, Black Tuesday will be seen as a turning point in our democracy.
"Whatever happens in the months ahead, 22 November 2011 will be remembered as the day that the ANC voted against media freedom - a cornerstone of our democracy."
