Franschhoek goes red, white and blue

Once again, Franschhoek, South Africa's gourmet capital will be commemorating its centuries-old French Huguenot heritage at its annual Bastille Festival on the weekend of July 12 and 13.
Barrel-rolling is an ever-popular activity in which many participate.

The Bastille Festival celebrates the collective theme of freedom, marrying South African and French history at the heart of both, Franschhoek. So, come along, paint the town red, white and blue, and join in ‘A Celebration of Freedom'.

Visitors can sample fine wines from Franschhoek's well-loved wineries and indulge in delectable dishes created by highly esteemed chefs. Dishes range from cheeses to oysters to salmon trout and all points between. There will also be a host of activities for everyone … there's something for golfers, fitness fanatics, and you can even watch French movies screened at Le Quartier Francais' Screening Room, if you wish.

A special event is The Long Walk, which pays homage to Nelson Mandela and his historic release from prison. This year, fellow comrade and Franschhoek patron, Tokyo Sexwale, will once again lead the walk.

For further information, please contact the Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourist Association (021 876 3603) or visit the website, http://www.bastillefestival.co.za.
