New netting becomes compost

US company Conwed Global Netting Solutions has recently launched its new environmentally-friendly Vexar Compostable Netting product - and it is environmentally friendly: it breaks down and becomes compost.
New netting becomes compost

Vexar® Compostable Netting is claimed to be a unique packaging material specially designed to be good for produce and the environment. Certified to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 for compostable thermoplastics, the product also has a high product-to-package ratio - which is claimed to make it an ideal choice for companies concerned about sustainability.

The company was reputedly the first to commercialise compostable netting for produce applications. Now with new their new product, they have broadened the number of applications to include header bags for citrus, potatoes and avocados and rope mesh bags for onions and even non-food products such as toys.

The netting is designed to combine strength, durability, and breathability all in a single environmentally-friendly material. The mesh netting is made from a unique blend of resins that is soft yet strong, gently conforming around delicate fruits and vegetables, while keeping produce fresh by allowing it to breath.

The company says it is easy to integrate the use of the new product into any produce-packaging operation because it requires no changes to existing packing equipment or processes. It also says the new product is surprisingly affordable - costing less than other compostable netting options and less than many packaging alternatives.

“Today's growers, packers and retailers care about doing what's right for the product and the planet,” says Brad Budde, the company's Packaging Business Manager. “The new netting is the one packaging solution that makes sense environmentally and economically.”
