SA and Irish accountants create strategic partnership

On 11 November 2015, the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) entered into a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland), which provides a route for qualified members of each body to become a member of the other body and to enjoy the benefits that each organisation offers.

"SAIPA and CPA Ireland share a common global perspective on the advancement of the accountancy profession," said Cindy Dibete, chairman of SAIPA. "There is a history of collaboration between our two professional bodies through our involvement with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Edinburgh Group."

This agreement also offers the institutes the opportunity to undertake joint research and thought leadership initiatives on the global stage.

"This MRA strengthens the already excellent relationship between the two organisations that ensures strengthened public financial management within South Africa by means of the unique online CPA Certificate in International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) financial reporting," added Brian Purcell, president of CPA Ireland.

The MRA does not cover those wishing to practice as a public practice accountant and/or to undertake auditing work due to the specific regulatory and legal requirements in each jurisdiction.
