Life in Black & White

Life in Black and White currently showing at the iart Gallery till the 1 July is a curated show with a palette predominantly limited to black and white. If this selection of work were a sentence, colour would serve the function of punctuation rather than subject or object.

The very simplicity of black and white combined with a sensitive use of colour allows for visual dialogue more subtle and sophisticated than any riot of colour could achieve. Rather than being restricted by a lack of colour this work speaks eloquently, choosing its words carefully and expressing itself a few decibels lower than the humdrum of our everyday lives. Like finding an old story book, given as a gift by somebody from a previous generation and last read when the world seemed much simpler - a book in which the typeface is as much a work of art as the narrative, in which the fine colour plates are few but sensitively placed to echo the action of the story appropriately.

Life in Black and White offers an opportunity to wander through the resonant shadows of memory and imagination.
