TheCity release debut EP tonight
With a bit part of the band's ethos being to incorporate their heritage into their music, the songs on the EP were written over the course of the last two years and are inspired by their musical heritage, personal experiences and life in South Africa. Their sound includes the use of Afro-beats, traditional African jazz harmonies and Zulu lyrics.
The EP was recorded at Ward Wide Music and Hey Papa Legend Studios in Cape Town over the course of two months. Produced by Graham Ward and Ross McDonald, each song was broken apart with the intent of exploring different ways better to express the melodies and lyrics, a process which resulted in the songs portraying the feel and sound the band desired for the EP.
Recurrent themes throughout the EP include the narratives of love and aspiration, with a message of staying true to oneself and finding the joy in the small things in life. Besides analogue synths, Afro-beats and Bonj's delectable vocals, fans can look forward to a fresh and crafted musical journey with moments of love and strength.
The EP will be launched today, 24 April, at Imperial, 31 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town, at 9pm. Entrance is R60 (including EP). With: Zoe Modiga and DJ Ra Mava Ntontela.
