Spring flowers at Kirstenbosch
Carpets of Namaqualand Daisies fill the garden with energy and colour: peach, orange and yellow parachute daisies (Ursinia speciosa, U. cakilefolia and U. calenduliflora); orange and cream Namaqua marigolds (Arctotis hirsuta); brilliant white Namaqualand daisies (Dimorphotheca pluvialis), purple wild cineraria (Senecio elegans), multi-coloured renoster marigold (Arctotis acaulis) and dainty blue flax (Heliophila coronopifolia). You are sure to see a few Cape canaries, grassbirds and sunbirds in amongst the flowers as they look for things to eat.
The vygies have also transformed into a kaleidoscope of iridescent colour: brilliant pinks, purple, magenta, yellow, orange and white - just about every colour but blue. You will find plants mainly from the genera Lampranthus, Drosanthemum and Ruschia.
Fynbos is also at its best in the spring, in particular the pincushions (Leucospermum species), which are at their peak, in dazzling shades of orange, yellow and red. Sunbirds and sugarbirds can often be seen perched on the blooms as they feed on the nectar.
