SA PR agency goes carbon neutral

Following the precedent set by its client and affiliate, ZOOM Advertising, Wired Communications is now carbon neutral.

To achieve this status, the agency analyzed its total carbon footprint in terms of electricity, paper usage and air and car travel by all staff and then this information was fed into the ‘Trees for Africa' calculator in order to give the total number of trees needed to render the agency carbon neutral.

It turns out that 70 trees will need to be planted in communities and at schools that need shade and that can benefit from the fruit that the trees will eventually bear. The NGO, ‘Trees for Africa' plants the trees and teaches the communities to maintain and look after them.

“This will be an ongoing initiative”, says Karey Evett of Wired Communications. “We will make an annual donation of trees to offset our consumption and we're also introducing a system to recycle what we use and generally cut down our energy and paper usage too.”
