Home grown hero for global commercial

Production company Velvet Films recently completed filming the latest Gillette Fusion commercial for Johannesburg ad agency Net#work BBDO. Elements of the commercial, starring SA Springbok champion Brian Habana, were filmed internationally while Habana's scenes were shot here in South Africa.

The footage was later sent to New York for post production, where scenes of Habana's international counterparts in the commercial, Tiger Woods, Thierry Henry and Roger Federer (who were filmed in each of their home countries), were edited together to create one seamless commercial.

To create continuity throughout the commercial, Velvet Films was required to match the footage already filmed for the other sports heroes. By creating an identical set and using similar lighting, it appears as though the entire commercial was shot by one production company, in one country, at one time.

According to producer Cat Lindsay, Habana was a pleasure to work with. His professionalism and great sense of humour was a blessing during the day as he was required to hop between the film set, stills shoot and interview room constantly. His patience was most appreciated during the ‘shaving shots', which required a fairly technical approach to perfect.

On completion of the final product, Daron Chatz, Velvet's director on the commercial, said: “It was a proud moment to see one of our Homegrown Heroes standing side by side with some of the World's top sports celebrities.”

The Gillette Fusion commercial is currently on air in South Africa, with different versions flighting worldwide.
