Adrian Ephraim appointed IOL managing editor

Independent Media is pleased to welcome back Adrian Ephraim who has re-joined the company as Managing Editor of Independent Online (IOL) news and entertainment site.

Adrian's appointment is regarded as a statement of intent from Independent Media in terms of revamping the IOL platform, and providing the resources to ensure that the company competes more effectively and aggressively in the digital news arena.

Adrian started his career as a sub-editor at the company's flagship title The Star, going on to senior production and editorial roles in the news and sports departments. Positions he held included that of Night Editor and Executive Editor of The Star, before he decided to specialise in the digital arena and was appointed Editor of IOL in 2010.

In 2011 he joined the Mail & Guardian as Online News Editor, a position he thrived in, leading the M&G's news team to two consecutive Book Awards for Best Editorial Team.

He has returned to Independent Media to head up the company's premier IOL online news and entertainment platform, which in March alone had 3.4 million unique browsers.

"Adrian's appointment is an extremely important one for Independent Media and we are excited to welcome him back on board. IOL was a trailblazing news site when it was first launched and it remains one of the country's most influential and authoritative news online sites. Over the years, however, there has been a dearth of investment in IOL and indeed no attention paid whatsoever to the Independent Group's digital strategy. This has changed considerably, as our company's digital strategy is absolutely pivotal to our future," said Dr Iqbal Survé, executive chairman of Independent Media.

"We have a great deal of catching up to do, but we are committed to becoming the leading digital player in the South African and African media industry and we are already making great strides in this regard. Our traditional print business is performing extremely well and our company is in good health, but our industry's future is digital and we are well on our way to preparing for and investing in that future," Dr Survé added.

Last month Independent Media launched its Mobile Journalism (MOJO) Studio, with some of the company's brightest young journalists revamping the group's staid approach to news and now providing multimedia content which will be crucial to enhancing the IOL offering in future.

Independent's My.Independent mobile app houses all its print newspaper titles on one easy-to-access platform. It is currently being refined and will be launched into the market soon.
