Malawi launches Pan-African e-Network

Malawi has launched a Pan-African e-Network touted by, newly-appointed information and civic education minister, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, as a technology milestone that will help the country save resources.

The projected, launched in Zomba City by the University of Malawi's constituent Chancellor College, will, among other things, link up Indian doctors and Malawian academicians who will be interacting and consulting through tele-conferencing.

The project, divided in three components, will also facilitate delivery of degree courses to students in Malawi by selected Indian Universities through tele-education.

Second opinions through tele-medicine

He said Malawi's referral hospitals will also be able to consult Indian doctors to get a second opinion in handling illnesses through tele-medicine.

"We also have the VVIP connectivity that allows President Bingu wa Mutharika to interact and hold video conferences with his African colleagues," said the minister.

India has announced that it will be connecting with the 53 countries of the African Union via satellite and fibre-optic networks at a budget of US$100m.

"Our government wants to strengthen its relation with Malawi as well as 12 other African countries that launched on the day Malawi launched its network," said India's External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna.

He said the Indian government will continue funding the initiative during the next five years.
