Enormous derrick barge pops into Durban

A huge derrick barge, the DB Superior Pride that has a six-deck accommodation and control section, has docked in Durban for repairs, according to a report published in print and electronic editions of The Mercury.

The 121-metre long and 32-metre wide barge accommodates up to 300 people in well-equipped cabins. It also has its own hospital for emergencies and a number of lounges and recreation areas for the crew.

The main crane on the barge has a lifting capacity of 800 tons at a 27 metre reach with a working radius of between 8,5 metres and 52 metres. Barges such as this are used to install or support oil platforms, oil derricks and drilling equipment.

The DB Superior Pride was towed to Durban by Gulf Service. It will be repaired at the Elgin Brown & Hamer shipyards at Bayhead and will be in dock for at least a month.
