Sky's the limit in hi-tech breed
The Geneva Motorshow is poised to showcase a great deal of exciting new concepts. Not the least of these is the Mazda Takeri that has been billed by its maker to be the next generation mid-sized sedan.
Inspired by the company's Kodo - Soul of Motion design theme seen on the Shinari four-door coupé concept shown at last year's show, the Takeri is said to feature the company's Skyactiv-D diesel engine with an i-stop (idle-stop) system allied to a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.
It will feature new technology that includes a regenerative braking system known as i-Eloop.
Short for Intelligent Energy Loop, it is the company's first regenerative braking system and uses a unique solution that converts kinetic energy to electricity during deceleration and stores it in an electric double-layer capacitor. This power is then used to run the vehicle's electric components, thereby reducing the engine load and increasing fuel economy by up to 10%.
Sharing the stand will be the CX5 crossover, the first production model incorporating the Kodo design theme and the first built with the full Skyactiv Technology range of engines, transmissions, body and chassis. It is claimed to offer relatively good performance and responsive yet predictable handling, without compromising on ride quality and safety. Both fuel economy and CO² emissions are claimed to be one of the lowest in the segment courtesy of a lightweight construction and an aerodynamic design combined with frugal engines and transmissions.
It will be available in three completely new engines. By modern standards these feature high compression ratios of 14:1 - a Skyactiv-D 2.2 diesel with two-stage turbocharger in two power derivatives, and a Skyactiv-G 2.0 direct-injection petrol - coupled to a new six-speed automatic or the new Sykyactiv-MT six-speed manual. The 2.2l diesel model with front-wheel drive is claimed to offer emissions of less than 120g/km of carbon emissions.
The interior is said offer generous boot volume and rear legroom, a high-quality feel, superior functionality and low noise levels. For safety it offers Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) and new active safety equipment like Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), High-Beam Control (HBC), and Lane Departure Warning.
Mazda's new offering will be launched in Europe some time this year. The South African launch is likely to follow shortly thereafter.
