Four shot in NUM and rival union fight over mines-control

According to News24, North West police said on Saturday, 11 August 2012, that four mineworkers were shot and wounded in Nkaneng near Marikana outside Rustenburg.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said two supporters of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) were shot allegedly by supporters of a rival union, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) on Friday night. Amcu and NUM are fighting for control over Rustenburg-based mines.

Ngubane said Amcu members had earlier marched at Karee mine on Friday, demanding a 12% salary increase. He added that NUM employees were prevented from going to work later that night - "a shooting incident took place and two people were wounded." Two other mineworkers were shot and wounded after the Amcu aligned group moved to Nkaneng - both were NUM members, as well. Cases of attempted murder have been opened, News24 reports.
