The project is groundbreaking in that it involves young children between the ages of four and nine in expressing their experiences and opinions on children's rights issues through the medium of radio. The project aims to stimulate a community radio forum through which South African children of all ages can communicate.
For the past six months, the production team at radio production and training house ABC Ulwazi has been involving young children in children's rights workshops. In the workshops the children were encouraged to communicate their point of view. With their (and their guardians) permission, their voices were recorded and used in the production of ten 10-minute children's rights programmes.
The programmes are called "Khuluma uKhululeke - Speak Free". Production of the English series is complete and a Zulu-version is underway. The programmes will be broadcast at selected Gauteng community radio stations in October and November 2003.
