Hugo, an endearing masterwork
A boy in search of answers
Scorsese focuses on its vivid characters and allows them to bring the magnificent story to life. Ultimately, it's a story about a boy in search of answers and through his journey discovers his true identity, and where he belongs. It's a moving and emotional experience filled with delightful comical vignettes, insightful revelations and meaningful context that reflects the hopes and aspirations of dreamers and lovers in search of fulfilment.
Ben Kingsley is superb and the antagonistic mentor and guide, adding a sensitive depth to the hardened exterior of the character. Asa Butterfield is absolutely charming in the title role, delivering a magnetic performance that commands attention, yet equally reveals a sincere sensitivity and touching vulnerability. Grace Moretz delivers a sweet "Nancy Drew" that connects Hugo with the outside world and also breaks down the barriers that isolates him. Sacha Baron Cohen is an absolute delight as the stubborn and obstinate policeman with a heart of gold; his comic timing is impeccable.
Added bonus of 3D
The spectacle and visual splendour of the design and cinematography is unbelievable and overwhelms the senses. The added bonus of 3D draws you into the world of the characters and definitely showcases the art of 3D without becoming gimmicky. Hugo is the kind of film you want to snuggle up to and share with friends and loved ones.
