Lacing up against AIDS

Sportswear manufacturer Nike has roped in Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and U2 frontman Bono to promote the sale of special red laces under the banner of "Lace Up, Save Lives".

The proceeds of the campaign, which was launched last week, will go towards the fight against Aids in Africa.

The initiative is designed to coincide with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"It is important to me to be involved in the campaign because I'm from Africa," said Drogba.

"Aids and HIV have destroyed Africa, and people don't really realise how easy it is to save lives - only two pills a day, which cost 40c."

Bono told the Sunday Times that it was a great African campaign to educate people about the disease.

"We want Africa to be known as a good place to live and not be famous for wars and deadly diseases," he said.

"Big countries are now interested in investing in Africa. As much as we hear negative messages about Africa, it is our duty also to tell positive messages."

In South Africa, the laces will cost R39.95.
