Food labels and junk food ad bans to help Australia slim down
The Australian Medical Association has called for serious action on obesity.
The president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA, Rosanna Capolingua, has asked government and doctors to work together to combat Australia's growing problem of obesity. This follows a report that shows that Australia is the fattest nation on earth.
The AMA are advocating 'traffic light' food labels, clearly stating the amounts of fat, sugar and salt in foods, using colour coding. They also want the government to restrict the advertising of junk food, particularly to children. This has been shown to have a positive effect on children's eating habits elsewhere in the world.
