Pinterest appoints first head of diversity
Morgan spent the past 10 years at Catalyst, a non-profit organisation which tracks women in business. She comes on board to help Pinterest reach the goals it set out for themselves in a statement release from July last year on diverse hiring.
Some of its goals include an increase of 30% in the hiring of female full-time engineers, an 8% increase in hiring full-time engineers from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds, and increase non-engineering roles to 12% from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds.
This comes shortly after Twitter hired Jeffrey Siminoff as their head of diversity. The appointment didn't suit well with many as Siminoff comes from Apple, who is reportedly slacking at the rate of hiring for diverse staff.
Pinterest is one of the few companies to take a more diverse stance, as Google and Facebook struggle to make changes.
Along with a more diverse approach, Pinterest will also be launching two programmes to help with its hiring. The first is The Pinterest Apprenticeship Program, year-long approach for those with a non-traditional tech background, while the other, Pinterest Engage, is an eight-week summer internship for college students pursuing an engineering degree.
