Video workshop project provides boost for Ghanaian musician

ACCRA: Ghanaian musician Tic Tac's new video for his hit track Kangaroo, taken from the hit new album Accra Connection, is the product of TV channel MTV base's landmark video training workshop, held in Accra in August 2006.

The viedo was directed by US director Gil Green (director of videos for Brandy, Lil' Jon and Akon) and was added to the channel's A-list rotation on Ghanaian Independence Day to be showcased to millions of music lovers across Africa.

Comments a delighted Tic Tac, “It was so cool to be able to be part of this MTV base Video Workshop project. Having a director like Gil Green to make a video for me is something that I could never have made happen on my own. Having your video played on MTV base is what we have always aimed for and knowing that the whole of Africa will see it is a dream come true.”

Share best practice

Adds Alex Okosi, GM and VP, MTV Networks Africa, “Kangaroo was shot in August 2006 as part of MTV base's unique Making the Video initiative, which aims to share best practice and forge collaborations between local artists and directors and top international video crews.

“We're delighted by the results of the project which has created a compelling, high quality and polished video that does full justice to the vision and artistry of Tic Tac.”

As well as Green's involvement, Kangaroo was produced by Martell Rose (producer for Akon, Ben Harper and Lil Flip), with director of photography Martin Lince and editor Pierre Verna. Ghanaian video directors collaborating on the project included Yahaya Alpha Suberu, King H Blankson, Agbeko Lucien Masseme, Joseph Botwey, Luureen Addy, Abdulai Awudu, Panji Anoff, QDL, Abraham Ohene-Djan, Gerald Gyimah, George Gyimah, and Paa Kow.

Eye opener

Comments Green, “Participating in the MTV base Video Workshop in Ghana and filming videos for Akon and Tic Tac was… an eye opener and I really enjoyed the process of teaching the class and collaborating as a group to direct the Tic Tac video. I'm really looking forwards to see ‘Making The Video - Tic Tac; I'm really interested to see how it turned out. I just finished shooting with Akon in Miami, for his next single ‘Don't Matter', but I'm looking forwards to being involved in other African projects.”

For those wishing to have a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what went on during the video shoot, MTV base is broadcasting an exclusive special edition of Making the Video: Tic Tac, premiering on Friday 23 March at 4pm CAT.
